A brief outline of Project 1 – What was your chosen
architecture? What were the concepts unpacked in your
concept model?
For project 1, I made a digital concept model based on Regium Waterfront building ideas by Zaha Hadid. Regium Waterfront Project is Zaha Hadid's latest project in Italy,
in the Mediterranean city of Reggio Calabria. The project includes a
museum and a performing arts centre on a sea strait that separates
continental Italy from the island of Sicily. The centre will be visible from the Sicilian coast. It explores the idea of a powerful curving structures, undulating, layering, twisting, dynamic, fluid and dramatic. Based on this concept, I was trying to explore
the idea of layering, undulating, dynamism, and futuristic. Besides, i tried to create new concept word, "RENAISSANCE", the word that is commonly used by Zaha Hadid to describe her design. "Renaissance" was more
than rebirth. It was also discovered both geographical exploration of
the new world. It is characterized by a rejection of traditional
scholasticism and focus on acquiring knowledge through the newly
developing sciences.
A visual analysis of 2x precedent studies as a pair –
One from your Project 1 architect, another from an architect
of your own choosing. How are they conceptually similar to
Project 1?
Precedent Studies as a pair:
ZAHA HADID - GALAXY SOHO
BIG - KAZAKHSTAN'S NEW NATIONAL LIBRARY
MVRDV - THE GREEN PEAKS
GALAXY SOHO
The Galaxy Soho project by Zaha Hadid
in central Beijing for Soho China is a 330,000 m² office, retail and
entertainment complex that will become an integral part of the living
city, inspired by the grand scale Beijing. This building is a
composition of five continuous, flowing volumes that are set apart,
fused or linked by stretched bridges. These volumes adapt to each other in all directions, generating a
panoramic architecture without corners or abrupt transitions that break
the fluidity of its formal composition. As users enter deeper into the
building, they discover intimate spaces that follow the same coherent
formal logic of continuous curve-linearity.
KAZAKHSTAN'S NEW NATIONAL LIBRARY
Danish architects BIG have won an international competition to design the Astana National Library in Astana, Kazakhstan. The design merges four forms; a circle, a rotunda, an arch and a yurt. The clarity of the circle, the courtyard of the rotunda, the
gateway of the arch and the soft silhouette of the yurt are combined to
create a new national monument appearing local and universal,
contemporary and timeless, unique and archetypal at the same time. The 2 interlocking structures: the perfect circle and the public spiral,
create a building that transforms from a horizontal organization where
library museum and support functions are placed next to each other, to a
vertical organization where they are stacked on top of each other
through a diagonal organization combining vertical hierarchy, horizontal
connectivity and diagonal view lines.
THE GREEN PEAKS
MVRDV recently won the concept design competition for a dense city
centre for the future new town of Gwanggyo, 35 ilometers south of the
Korean capital Seoul. The plan consists of a series of overgrown hill shaped buildings with
great programmatic diversity, aiming for high urban density and
encouragement of further developments around this so-called “Power
Centre,” one of the envisioned two centers of the future new town. The site is surrounded by a beautiful lake and forested hills, the
design aims to create a landscape on top of the new program that
enlarges the green qualities and that links the surrounding parks by
turning the site into a park. The buildings consist of a mix of public, retail, culture, housing, offices and
leisure generating life in new metropolitan areas, and encouraging
further developments around them. To facilitate this all elements are designed as rings. By pushing these
rings outwards, every part of the program receives a terrace for outdoor
life. Plantations around the terraces with a floor to floor circulation
system store water and irrigate the plants.
Those three building that i chose are conceptually similar to my Project 1 concept, in terms of the curving power, undulating, layering, fluid, organic, twisting, spiral, dynamics and dramatic.
A Design Proposal and Design Draft for Assignment 3 – List three specific building types and functions for your
new design. How can they challenge the concepts and ideas
you have looked at in
Project 1? Select one and begin a first
design draft.
Based on the consultation with my tutor, we listed three specific building types and functions for my new design;
- Scientific Lab - science project, animal breeding, research lab, etc.
- Planetarium - science work, planets, astronomy, etc.
- Headquarters - NASA building, space, aviation, etc.
Based on these three options, i decided to create a Scientific Lab for sciences work and projects. This choice would allow my concepts of curving power, undulating, layering, twisting, dynamics and dramatic.

A Short Description on your Prescribed Additional
Representation – What is the relevance of the technology
you have selected to the nature of your design? What
kinds of techniques and processes would you use from
this technology in order to engage with the design of your
architectural solution?
3ds max will be used as my primary source of modelling and photoshop to edit the renderings. The other technology that i will be using is CryEngine3, to create some of interactive environments, CG short film, buildAR for showing the construction and composition, and Interactive Web Media for overall presentation.
